There is a natural tendency at the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one to look back. It is easy to get caught up in the past, wondering what might have been. I have come to appreciate the danger of looking with eyes filled with hindsight. At the same time, I find looking in the mirror is helpful. There are lessons which double as teaching aids. Some in bold letters. Others are illustrations of old wisdom words.
As I look back, I find myself smiling at words which often describe the situation; “Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” (James 2.17). As ironic as this might be, it is also a call to action as I consider the next chapter. What if I measured actions through rulers of care, kindness, and love? These overlapping principles give shape to an infinite way of using the results in my life for a high purpose.
As I consider the reflections from wrestling through the dark nights of one’s soul, I have come to appreciate how uniquely personal our demons are. In many ways, it does not matter how big or small mine are as compared to yours. What does matter is that you and I are able to recognize what exists within. With the recognition comes two great challenges. Will we see these demons for what they are? Will we seek help beyond our own abilities to deal with them? With two yeses, the battle begins!
To everyone who embraces what the future may hold, decades old whispers remind me of the following.
It is an infinite battle which brings great opportunity and difficult challenges. Be prepared for one step followed by endless more.
You and I will feel alone at times, but we never are. In addition to Divinity, everyone is loved in her/his circle. I often find myself doubting or forgetting, however love, support, and friendship are as close as I am willing to see.
Our calling is a Divine quest. If we choose, we can be partners with Divinity.
