I have no idea what Ben is like. I never spoke to him. I had never seen him before yesterday. As it was, I was only in his presence for a few minute at the Flower Caf? during a late lunch. As I inhaled a Greek salad, Ben and a waitress share some friendly banter. From the conversation shared with everyone in the caf?, it was clear that Ben was a regular. Ben was also leaving the community. The where, when, and how was known to the two, so the conversation was all about saying thank-you, I will miss you, and goodbye. Their conversation only lasted a few minutes.
As he left, a new reflective conversation emerged between one of the owners and the waitress. “I will really miss Ben, especially his cheer.” “So will I.” “I hope he comes back soon.” “Life will not be as rich or cheerful without Ben’s voice.”
I would like to know Ben. I like knowing anyone that carries Hope with them. Their power to give new life is infectious. I want people like this in my life! I thrive in the presence of those who believe. From the testimony left in this Caf?, I know there are at least who will miss, treasure, and hold Ben close to their hearts for a long time to come.
This is not the first time this has happened. In times old, “God says: ‘The workers of Egypt, the merchants of Ethiopia, and those statuesque Sabeans will all come over to you—all yours. Docile in chains, they'll follow you, hands folded in reverence, praying before you: ‘Amazing! God is with you! There is no other God—none.’” (Isaiah 45.14)
It also does not have to be the last. We have the power to bring Hope to the lives in our community. We have the ability to introduce the Presence into each life we touch. We can be the difference. Our actions can come with the power to touch. People will remember. Individuals will reflect and be stronger because of what we do.
