Discoveries are all around us. Last night I rediscovered the joy of sharing food with friends. I’ve always known that having a meal with those one cares for is enjoyable, yet it is easy to slip into a sense of complacency. I saw and experienced the joy that comes with good company and conversation; my resolution is to always value the relationships that I have and never take them for granted. But this isn’t the only discovery of the past few days.
In the oddities of life there are discoveries and lessons to be learned. The challenge of walking through sub-zero weather, against the wind is full of metaphors and lessons if one is willing to see. The casual observation of one to another can be a lesson from one to another on the journey if we are willing to be open and present at that time. Taking the heat and the cold of the Russian steam baths in New York is rejuvenating, if one lets the experience take him there. Everything around us, past, present and future can be a teacher; if we choose to see.
Wisdom’s note in the past is an example of lessons and examples, even in the oddities. “There are three solemn dignitaries, four that are impressive in their bearing—a lion, king of the beasts, deferring to none; a rooster, proud and strutting; a billy goat; a head of state in stately procession.” (Proverbs 30.28-31)
Today is a fresh new day, full of experiences for all. The challenge is there for us to take-being open for learning, being present for experiencing, and being available for letting our eyes instruct. A hug from a child can help us know that our thirst for love is being filled in a cup that overflows. Lumps of ice, scraped but enduring to the end, reflect the cloud patterns that spark our imagination. Landscapes that are forever changing bring hope for those who feel locked in patterns that they would like to break. Life is out on display; ready and waiting to teach. Open wide.
