The conference was full of people, high energy, and an exciting buzz. A premier cloud provider had orchestrated a day at Dubai’s World Trade Centre. Within the four halls, you could find the latest use cases, enjoy a conversation, and relax with fresh coffee. I found a succulent decorating each standing table—nature and rest in a tech-driven setting. As much as I enjoyed it, I wondered where each decoration would go next.
Life is found in the moment, which is never static; it is a step. There is a dynamic in being in the moment. I find myself thinking it is a destination. When I remember it is a skip in my long throw of the flat stone across time, I focus on what is next. There is a holistic point to use as a guide. Life is found in being fully present in each moment, knowing that the moment is a doorway to the next. Moments are squandered and lost when I do not recognise the next moment that follows. Each has the potential to be a learning moment leading towards a better future.
Being fully in the moment requires one to make an all-in commitment. Life likes to remind me that my mobile is not required for this. There is no advantage in knowing the latest event that is somewhere else. Whatever is needed is secondary to what is unfolding in the present. With each distraction that I embrace, the frustration can grow. It inevitably leads to a reality where I do not know where I am, what I want to do, and even why this moment is my time. When I catch myself, I can hear the echo of an old observation, “Exasperated, I vowed, ‘They’ll never get where they’re going, never be able to sit down and rest.’” (Hebrews 3.11)
I don’t know what happened to the succulent from the conference, but I do know it left me with lesson reminders. I can be fully present with care and kindness, knowing the moment will have a door to what is next.
