The lighting and busyness of the hotel lobby clouded my ability to see the biplane on top of the books. I stopped to look, wondering aloud about the designer’s intent, possible message, and targeted audience. I struggled to imagine the overall theme. In my confusion, I could hear whispers just for me. The lessons in these symbols are framing how I see the day ahead.
Every moment can include something I do not fully understand. In this scene, the biplane is obvious. I also wonder about the connection to the books it was sitting on. There was more. In my awareness and being open to what I did not understand, life took the opportunity to use the unknown as the foundation for a lesson of the moment. The value of being present while not knowing was just the beginning. I found hope in understanding the designs of yesterday, which continued to evolve and are still changing. I thought of the courage of the pioneers, putting themselves out to reach for the skies. In my space, I hear the call to go beyond.
Details reveal more than one initially understands. From the reflecting light on the prop to the juxtaposition of flowers in the background, I saw evidence of designers at work, Divine and human. I could see how the best of our efforts has made a difference. It told me of opportunities beyond the barriers. It was as if I was rehearing an old prophet for the first time; “After Moses had read out all the terms of the plan of the law – God’s ‘will’ – he took the blood of sacrificed animals and, in a solemn ritual, sprinkled the document and the people who were its beneficiaries.” (Hebrews 9.19). That was the plan then.
What happens next is up to me. I started with confusion as I looked at the display. I turned to walk on, filled with awe and hope. Today is my opportunity to fly, to bring a sense of possibility to each moment – words and actions towards a better future.
