Sports figures can see the moves coming. Set plays, the formation, look in the eyes, slight changes in the individual nuances of different player’s body language all give clues as to what is coming. It is as if there is an arrogance screaming out about what is to come, assuming someone is listening, understanding, and preparing for what will happen next. The signals don’t just come in sports. Politicians, lawyers, negotiators, and even potential dates all signal their intentions well in advance of anything actually happening.
Sometimes it actually helps. A question tossed across the office can be one of several things. Yesterday an ally toss one embedded with a telegraph. I knew exactly by the tone, body language, and inflection what the answer was to the question even before I understood the words.
“Is this statement current?” Given that it was only days old the obvious answer was yes. Assuming that nothing material had changed the thoughtful answer was still yes. I had not idea what had changed, facts, logic, or assumptions, but I knew the answer.
“No, but I can make it current if you need me to.”
There is a story where the character is clearly described and the attitude and approach telegraphed to the reader. “It was suppertime. The Devil by now had Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, firmly in his grip, all set for the betrayal.” (John 13.2) I knew what is coming. Jesus could see it as well and was prepared for what followed.
In life there is much you and I can see, sometimes clearly, other times as if it was telegraphed. Yet I wonder if I am looking out for the most important telegraph of my life. Do I see, really see with my heart, the signals Divinity is sending? Do I understand the nuances buried in the beauty around me, the emotions caught in gifts of relationship and love, or the unconditional nature of it all? God is clearly telegraphing Divinity’s intentions. Today is an opportunity to listen, hold, and understand everything God has made ready.
