Pot Holes

From a distance pot holes never look like much.  Explain you views to someone driving Harlem River Drive late at night during an early spring rain.  If you don’t drive, it’s easy see how you could find yourself describing how one could avoid holes in the road which grow without warning.  I’d love to see you sharing your views on this to someone just in from a long night of driving on one of India’s super highways.  When a traffic report talks of category 3 potholes in New York City, sit up and take note!  This is a potential disaster of significant consequences sending an invitation.  For everyone, there is little emotion when one looks at a pothole from a distance.

Life is full of pot holes.  Cracks formed from previous valleys and poor decisions, weaknesses found in our porous defenses, actions of others, and random events driven by unseen hands all move in ways which give birth to monumental jolts in life.  It is as if the bottom in life drops out.  Suddenly the momentum you have carried with you is jerked in ways that can easily tear through the fiber of your soul.  There is no assurance that you will come through in one piece!  The sudden drop, the exposure of every fiber of your frame to forces you were never designed to withstand, can play into a scene of catastrophic proportions and consequences.

I’m not sure why I woke up today remembering how vicious life and pot holes can be.  Perhaps it is the lingering impact of a day which left me feeling tired, bruised, and surprised.  Perhaps it was the laced memories of a car I owned for several years which lived with severely damaged and repair wheels because of New York’s roads.  Perhaps it is because I can sense the contrast of what has happened between Monday and a turning towards God.

I found myself saying “I thank you, God.  You were angry but your anger wasn't forever.  You withdrew your anger and moved in and comforted me.” (Isaiah 12.1)
