It is easy feel overwhelmed. After all, they are bigger, smarter, more powerful, have more resources, and know how to play the game. What can you or I do against these kind of odds? It is even possible to have an impact? Do we make a difference? Does anything really matter?
The questions are not new. They are not even close to being original. Individuals of ever generation, community, and position have asked these questions as long as there has been a community. Big city or small village, well known or a new comer, someone with status or one who rights to be known; in each moment someone believes they do not make a difference. He or she doesn’t touch the lives of the people around him/her. He/she doesn’t make a difference. He/she doesn’t really matter.
I’d like to suggest we are all wrong, individually and corporately. Individuals do matter. Individuals do make a difference, often far more than anyone realizes at the time. Individuals always touch others because touch is at the heart of what it means to be alive, take a step, and walk in relationships. It is through others that I experience what living is like, including being in relationship with God. It is through and with others that I find my calling and purpose. It is others that form one of the most important organizations I will ever know, community.
There is one element of others I often forget. God is living in and through them. I see their flaws, God sees their value. I judge them for what they could be, God accepts them for who and what they are. I am conditional, God unconditional. I might wonder, yet “still, he must be reckoned with, a most wise God who knows what he's doing. He can call down catastrophe. He's a God who does what he says. He intervenes in the work of those who do wrong, stands up against interfering evildoers.” (Isaiah 31.2) God touches my life and yours through your action and mine.
Today, we will touch the world.
