We often want to be different than we are. You can see it in others around you. Musicians jamming with others, seeking to experience the wonder and beauty found in the music of others while refining their own story and abilities. Comedians listening, laughing, and enjoying the experience of being in the audience while picking up techniques that fit in their repertoire. Individuals involved in business, always looking for an idea, tool, or technique that will help them compete in a vicious world.
Even if one does not want to change for the better, we find ourselves wanting to change to avoid yesterday’s story. We know the reality of relationships disasters, broken or strained trust, and our bodies crying out in pain. Whatever makes up your plate, it is not fun. Whatever you story was and is, you think it could and should be better. Whatever baggage you carry from the past and the present, you want tomorrow to be better than today. Your story and mine, if it is to be different, will involve change. We want it. More than likely, we need it.
The question is how.
I find myself learning and relearning the process. I wish change could happen without work, steps, or pain. I have never found this to be true. I hold onto to yesterday because I know I made it through. I treasure who I was because I convinced myself I was ok. Yet I know in my heart I could do, have, and be more. The key lies in my steps. When I take them with God, open to learning from my mistakes, reconnecting with I step away, stuff happens.
Divinity’s promise is power; “I'm transforming you from worm to harrow, from insect to iron. As a sharp-toothed harrow you'll smooth out the mountains, turn those tough old hills into loamy soil. You'll open the rough ground to the weather, to the blasts of sun and wind and rain. But you'll be confident and exuberant, expansive in The Holy of Israel!” (Isaiah 41.15, 16)
Today is a step forward.
